Playing Texas Hold’em

Starting with the dealer, each person receives one card, then a second card; both are dealt face down. Once everyone has received their two cards then the first round of betting begins. The two players to the left of the dealer must place blind bets. Immediately to the left is the little blind and second to the left is the big blind. The dealer then turns over the three cards which have been placed face down in the middle of the table. This group of three cards are called the flop and are community cards and can be used to improve the hand of any player around the table. The second round of betting then occurs.

The dealer turns over the fourth community card called the turn or fourth street, followed by the third round of betting.

The final community card–number five–is turned over by the dealer. This card is called the fifth street or the river, and the final round of betting is completed.

The showdown begins with any active players in the round displaying their cards beginning with the person who made the first bet. Any combination of the community hands and the pocket cards from the player’s hand can be used in creating the top hand. If the five community cards are the top hand, then the pot is shared amongst the players.

The commonly accepted betting strategy is to bet fewer hands but to bet high and raise as often as possible when you do bet. Especially in the no-limit type of hold’em, where the player sits in relation to the dealer has a great impact on the strategy. If you are in an early position it’s wiser to play fewer hands.

The standard poker rankings for each hand apply to the game listed in order from high to low.

  • Royal Straight Flush - It is composed of all of the same suite, ten through Ace.
  • Straight Flush - It is composed of 5 cards of the same suite ranked in succession. For example 6-10, or A-5
  • Four of a kind - A four of a kind occurs when you have all the cards of one type.
  • Full house - A full house happens when you have both three of a kind and also a pair. The higher 3 of a kind wins, then the higher pair.
  • Flush - A flush occurs when you have five of the same suite. If there is more then one flush in a hand, then the person with the highest card in their hand wins.
  • Straight - A straight occurs when a player has five cards in ranked succession. An Ace can play both as a high card or a low card.
  • Three of a kind - three cards of any rank or suite
  • Two pair - Two pair is when your best five cards create a pair twice.
  • One pair - Top pair is usually the hand you’ll be betting and trying to win some pots with. When. more then one person has the same pair.
