Strategies in Horse Race Betting

• Across the board – one horse is placed with the same amount on three different bets – win, place, and show. If the horse turns out to be the Big Winner, all three bets pay off. However, if it comes in second, the place and show bets win. If it ends up in third place, only the show bet wins.
• Quinella – if you can’t make up your mind, you can place your bets on two horses that you think could bag the first and second places, in any order. For example, a 4-6 Quinella wins if 4 is win, and 6 is place, or vice versa.
• Exacta – as the name suggests, the chosen horses should win in exact order for you to bag the prize. For example, in a 4-6 Exacta, 4 should be win, whereas 6 becomes place. As the order of the winnings matter, this bet collects a higher pay.
• Trifecta – it is a strategy just like exacta, wherein the chosen horses should win in order. This time, though, you should choose another horse for show. A 4-6-8 Trifecta could win you a lot of money if horse 4 ends up as win, 6 as place, and 8 as show.
• Superfecta – this time around, the chosen horses add up the four, wherein they should all win in order up to the fourth place. A 4-6-8-10 Superfecta requires horse 4 as win, 6 as place, 8 as show, and 10 as fourth placer.
• Daily Double – It requires the gambler a chance to choose the winners for two consecutive races for him to automatically win the Daily Double ticket. Horse bets should be placed before the first selected race. Similar combination bets requiring a higher selection of winners and races, are called pick games. Pick 3 requires choosing the winners of three consecutive races, Pick 4 requires the winners of four consecutive races, and so on.
